Discount Retro Game Challenge

Retro games brings back to life 5 old video games from the 80's. When you first load up you get this introduction about some guy who wants to challenge you to his so called awesomeness of gaming skills. This part I found boring, as he takes you back in time to the 80's and you play as a couple of kids who are issued challenges by this guy. First up is Cosmic Gate, a game simmilar to space invaders. You are given 4 challenges to complete, some things are pretty simple, just to get you used to the controls, then others are just get a certain high score and things like that.

What I found annoying was the amount of dialog between the two kids on the screen. I guess they added it so the bottom screen of the DS wouldn't look empty, but really, I am just continuously pressing A trying to skip all this sh...doodie. I really do not care to see stupid dialog such as the kids mother asking him to go buy groceries or asking if you liked such and such game... it's just pointless and slows everything down. I also found it annoying that this only has 5 games, but you have to complete the first game before the second one is playable. The challenges are not hard, and you will unlock everything within a day if you can be bothered, but I would have much preferred to just be able to select any game as some of them are not so appealing to certain people as others. It's just time consuming to say the least.

Next up is Haggleman, something kinda like Mario Bros, you play as a ninja and jump on bad guys heads, once all enemies are gone, you get a boss, and so on for 8 levels. Then onto Rally King, a rather boring car racing game that you can master slides around corners, but none the less, not one of the best racing games to play... Gueadia Quest is some kind of Zelda wanna-be, and Star Prince is the best game I think on this whole thing, it's a Galaxian type of thing that looks like Cosmic Gate at first, but you find out it is much better, especially when you get to the 3rd challenge and receive rapid fire. From there, it just challenges you more on the other games again, with different things to do.

Overall, the game is not bad at all, I just wish the dialog thing was taken out, or they made an option to say "No, I don't want that method". The graphics are what you expect knowing it's a retro 80's games pack that is being re utilized for the modern day gamer. I never played any of these games, so I'm not sure if they are actual games that existed, or just imitations of games, but i'm sure the control response is much better on DS then the old Atari joysticks they may have onces used. One thing I thought was stupid at first was the option to look in hint magazines, but then i realized, they tell you the cheats. So instead of checking the internet, you can just check these books you can select in the game and it tells you codes for invincibility and level selects etc.

For people around in the Atari era of gaming, you may get a kick out of playing this game, and i'm sure the newer generations will appreciate it too. I just wouldn't pay much more then 10 bucks for it. The replay value is 50/50. If you loved any of these games, you may go back and play them again, but if you are bored after the challengers, it may be a dust collector of a game. With this one, I can just say, you have to try it, if you like it, you like it, if you think it's ok like I did, you may never turn it on again.
