If you were to buy a DS charging cable in the store, you would have two options: AC adaptor or cigarette lighter adaptor. I don't know why this isn't an option as well. A USB cable is a much more convenient and compact way of charging your DS.
As far as the cable goes, it works great! Very easy to plug into your computer or usb power adapter and charge your DS. Much more convenient and compact than the AC charger. Great purchase if you don't always have an outlet available.
